Ryan began his employment at Luebeck, Hammar, McCarty & Goldwarg, (formerly Angel, Coil & Bartlett) in 2015 and became a partner at the firm in 2016. Ryan’s practice has focused on criminal defense since joining the firm, and as of 2024 he has dedictaed the last 16 years of his career practicing criminal law in Gallatin County and throughout Montana. Ryan takes great pride in his work and is committed to helping people achieve the best possible outcome in their case. The moment someone is accused of a crime can be a confusing and daunting time. In a time of need, finding someone you can depend on is pivotal. Ryan will help his clients understand and analyze their cases and will apply his years of experience to empower his clients through competent and thorough representation.

Ryan was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma while his parents were attending the University of Oklahoma in nearby Norman. Ryan graduated from high school in Tulsa and during his formative years would take annual summer road trips to fly-fish the western U.S. with his father. Ryan’s first visit to Montana occurred in 1987, when he fished the Madison River with his dad for a week while staying at Slide Inn just downstream of Quake Lake. Ryan’s initial trip to Montana instilled a passion that ultimately resulted in his decision to attend Montana State University for his undergraduate studies. In 1998 Ryan graduated from MSU with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences.

In between his undergraduate studies and law school Ryan spent two years working in Alaska as a fishing guide in Katmai National Park and on Kodiak Island; working as an intern at the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation in Washington, D.C.; and travelling extensively in Southeast Asia, Mexico, and Central America. In 2002 Ryan returned to Montana to attend the University of Montana School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctorate in 2005.

Ryan first exposure to criminal defense occurred while working as a Public Defender in Bozeman for 4 years, where he gained invaluable experience defending people accused of all types of misdemeanor and felony crimes. While at OPD Ryan gained extensive trial experience, taking dozens of cases to verdict. In 2009 he was awarded the Public Defender Excellence Award for Region 8. Ryan then prosecuted for the City of Bozeman in Bozeman Municipal Court for 3 years and was acting as Chief Prosecutor at the time that he decided to enter private practice.

Ryan is a devoted husband and father of three who enjoys fishing, tying flies, bird hunting, and travelling internationally.
